The Story of White Rock Hall
Returning to his hometown Marshall in the early 1990s after a successful musical career, musician and poet Keith Flynn founded the Asheville Poetry Review, which has published over 1800 new and established writers. Then he looked around for something new to create.
He had a vision of transporting an abandoned country church from it’s century-long resting place to the top of a distant hill. The move would make the building a sanctuary where poetry and music fuse to become more than their parts. It’d be a challenge, but it was possible with the expertise of the locals. The church was built in 1909, and while neglected and needing attention, the “bones” revealed a solid building that Keith Flynn knew could be repurposed as a gathering place for a different kind of spiritual purpose.(And no, they don’t make buildings now like they used to.)
Keith Flynn’s idea was to rest the abandoned building on 14 hilltop acres and convert the building to a sound studio, arts, and community space for the mountain town of Marshall, NC., and parts beyond. A serene sanctuary where friends, musicians, poets, and storytellers could gather and create.
Now he brings the results of his vision to the listening community on WPVM. Live from White Rock Hall will air each Tuesday at 5:00 pm. The show will share the stories, poetry, music, and thoughts that materialize from the organic and welcoming atmosphere Keith and his partner have achieved at White Rock Hall, ……..a repurposed church on the hill.
On a muddy day in 2009 the effort began, using a flatbed truck, the building inched up the incline to the top of the hill. There it rests for the local and regional artists to practice their music, participate in a workshop and enjoy the company of like minded creatives.
